Photodynamic Therapy, or PDT, is a highly effective treatment here at the MedSpa. PDT treatments are named after the photo sensitive topical which is applied during this treatment. If you have issues like acne, large pores, pre-cancers, dullness or uneven skin tone, they can all be addressed with this one treatment. This is why we like to call it Max Rejuv!
Providing some Clarification about Photodynamic Therapy or PDT
What is this treatment? Does it involve a laser?
A Photodynamic Therapy; or PDT appointment, is schedule for about 2 to 3 hours. During this time our Esthetician will cleanse and prepare your skin. Then the Esthetician will apply the photo sensitive topical. We then let it rest, or incubate, on your skin for a specific amount of time. This amount of time is established by one of our Medical Providers, and dependant on several things such as the overall health of your skin.
Once your incubation time is complete our Esthetician will activate the topical photosensitive product using one of our Lasers and may choose to use one of our flat panel diode lasers as well. Photodynamic Therapy is the result of the photosensitive product being activated.
Does this treatment hurt?
You may notice a slight burning when the photosensitive product is applied. Some clients do, some clients don’t. If you do it is typically very minimal.
When the product is activated by laser is when you may feel some discomfort. It is generally described as a mild sunburn sensation and is typically very tolerable.
How does PDT work to make my skin healthier?
During the incubation period the photo sensitive topical, is absorbed down into several layers of your skin. When our Esthetician activates it with the laser, it causes all of those layers of your skin, including the deeper layers to react. By both helping the top layer to slough off, and stimulating the deeper layers to boost their collagen and elastin production, within 1 week you have glowing skin.
What should I know before I schedule?
First off, your friends will notice. So be prepared to answer their questions!
Secondly, you will need to stay inside for the first 24 hours after your treatment. You will be photo-sensitive for about 48 hours. The reason why is because we use a photosensitive topical. Even though we activate it, there is still some left that is un-activated. When you schedule your treatment, make sure your calendar can accommodate you taking a day or two inside.
Lastly, you will need some Epionce™ products to help your skin rebound quickly. No worries, we will provide you with a Skin Barrier Repair Kit that has all the great Epionce™ products that you will need.
